{"id":540,"date":"2009-11-30T10:22:15","date_gmt":"2009-11-30T17:22:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?page_id=540"},"modified":"2010-11-10T16:24:31","modified_gmt":"2010-11-10T21:24:31","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?page_id=540","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Overview of Prior Research<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since CAIR&#8217;s inception, American investigative journalists such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steveemerson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Emerson<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investigativeproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Investigative Project on Terrorism<\/a>) and scholars such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danielpipes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Pipes<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.meforum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Middle East Forum<\/a>) have followed CAIR&#8217;s activities and attempted to expose them to the public, media and policymakers.<\/p>\n<p>After 9\/11 this group of investigative reporters grew to include numerous online journalists.\u00a0 Leading investigators were Joe Kaufman (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americansagainsthate.org\/cw\/\" target=\"_blank\">CAIR Watch<\/a>), Andrew Whitehead (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.anti-cair-net.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Anti-CAIR<\/a>), Robert Spencer (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jihadwatch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jihad Watch<\/a>), and the team of experts at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nefafoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">NEFA Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By 2007 this growing group of researchers expanded to include the Department of Justice prosecutors in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holy_Land_Foundation_for_Relief_and_Development\" target=\"_blank\">Holy Land Foundation terrorism finance trial<\/a>.\u00a0 Adding their voices were radio journalists such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelsavage.wnd.com\/\">Michael Savage<\/a> and a growing group of lawyers including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitecollar.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Horowitz<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidyerushalmilaw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Yerushalmi<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legal-project.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Legal Project at the Middle East Forum<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomasmore.org\/default-sb_thomasmore.html?349917941\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas More Law Center<\/a> and Reed Rubinstein, whose <a href=\"http:\/\/97.74.65.51\/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=26296\" target=\"_blank\">2006 victory against CAIR<\/a> in the Andrew Whitehead case set the stage for further legal investigation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"..\/?page_id=583\">Research Studies<\/a>: The CAIR Observatory is a research center building upon the work of earlier authors.\u00a0 Three major studies have been done.\u00a0 The most recent is <em><a href=\"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?p=1811\">Muslim Mafia<\/a><\/em>, a groundbreaking 2009 book by P. David Gaubatz and Paul Sperry based on insider documents obtained by David&#8217;s son Chris Gaubatz when he worked undercover for months as an intern at CAIR&#8217;s headquarters.\u00a0 A comprehensive and deeply researched 10-part study, <a href=\"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?p=584\">&#8220;CAIR Exposed,&#8221;<\/a> was published in 2008 by the Investigative Project on Terrorism under the direction of Steven Emerson.\u00a0 This is the foundational work on CAIR based on his important collection of documents spanning the 1990&#8217;s and the 2000&#8217;s.\u00a0 We provide another significant study entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?p=604\">&#8220;Extremism and the Council on American-Islamic Relations&#8221;<\/a> which was released in 2007 by an anonymous author.\u00a0 If any reader can assist us in identifying the origins of this study we would very much like to give them credit for a useful piece of work.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"..\/?page_id=1306\">Research Resources<\/a>: Since CAIR\u2019s inception, American investigative journalists such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steveemerson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Emerson<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investigativeproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Investigative Project on Terrorism<\/a>) and scholars such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danielpipes.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Pipes<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.meforum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Middle East Forum<\/a>) have followed CAIR\u2019s activities and attempted to expose them to the public, media and policymakers. This section displays websites devoted to exposing CAIR or containing volumes of relevant CAIR content.\u00a0 These sites were selected because they: (1) Are specifically dedicated to CAIR, (2) have unique reports about CAIR, and\/or (3) have archives of comprehensive coverage on CAIR.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Opportunities for Continuing Research<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"..\/?page_id=1307\">Open Research Topics<\/a>: The CAIR Observatory has obtained and posted publicly available CAIR real estate records from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.dc.us.landata.com\/#\" target=\"_blank\">Washington, DC Recorder of Deeds<\/a>.\u00a0   In most areas of the United States the Recorder of Deeds (or   Clerk-Recorder) keeps property records at a county level.\u00a0 For example,   we have also collected documents from the <a href=\"http:\/\/cr.ocgov.com\/grantorgrantee2\/welcome.asp\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cGrantor\/Grantee Search\u201d<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/egov.ocgov.com\/ocgov\/Clerk-Recorder%20-%20Tom%20Daly\" target=\"_blank\">Orange County, CA Clerk-Recorders office<\/a> and <a href=\"..\/?cat=204\">posted<\/a> them to this website.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"..\/?page_id=3063\">Guide to CAIR&#8217;s Online Presence<\/a>: CAIR has a considerable online presence, from it&#8217;s national website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CAIR.com<\/a>,  to chapter websites and blogs, to the Twitter pages and blogs of  individual CAIR leaders.\u00a0 We also include links to the official sites of  the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and the Muslim  Brotherhood (Ikhwan).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?cat=79\">Action Alerts<\/a>: CAIR continuously publishes action alerts, in the form of news items, press releases and calls to activism that were sent out via email to the CAIR listserv. The CAIR Observatory maintains an archive of 2,284 CAIR Action Alerts dated from September 6, 2001 to February 13, 2007.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?cat=6\">Annual Reports<\/a>: The national CAIR office and some chapters release annual reports which  usually include a page or two on financial activity.\u00a0 These are useful  to use as a baseline in comparison to the financial information CAIR  reports to the IRS.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?page_id=556\">Real Estate<\/a>: This site gives an overview of CAIR&#8217;s properties which are located throughout the United States.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?page_id=551\">IRS Document<\/a>s: This site provides information on CAIR&#8217;s financial activities vis a vis the IRS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overview of Prior Research Since CAIR&#8217;s inception, American investigative journalists such as Steven Emerson (Investigative Project on Terrorism) and scholars such as Daniel Pipes (Middle East Forum) have followed CAIR&#8217;s activities and attempted to expose them to the public, media and policymakers.
