{"id":4108,"date":"2010-06-25T11:34:51","date_gmt":"2010-06-25T15:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?page_id=4108"},"modified":"2010-06-25T12:21:56","modified_gmt":"2010-06-25T16:21:56","slug":"june-25-2010-summer-of-censorship-press-release","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?page_id=4108","title":{"rendered":"June 25, 2010: &#8220;Summer of Censorship&#8221; Press Release"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<\/p>\n<p><strong>CSP Condemns CAIR\u2019s Campaign Season Attacks on Candidates<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON DC, June 25, 2010 \u2013 The Center for Security Policy today  released the results of an investigation of the Council on  American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) that reveals a clear pattern of  intimidation \u2013 the beginning of CAIR\u2019s Summer of Censorship Campaign \u2013  to silence 2010 candidates and public figures who discuss Jihad, Shariah  and Islamic terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCAIR\u2019s most recent attempt to intimidate Senator Chuck Schumer  (D-NY) shows their commitment to censoring any criticism of the  terrorist organization Hamas,\u201d said the Center\u2019s President Frank  Gaffney.<\/p>\n<p>On June 14, CAIR accused Schumer of making statements that were  \u201cunconscionable, reprehensible and in blatant disregard for the sanctity  of human life,\u201d and demanded he retract them.\u00a0 On June 9 Schumer had  said:<\/p>\n<p>The boycott of Gaza to me has another purpose \u2014 obviously the first  purpose is to prevent Hamas from getting weapons by which they will use  to hurt Israel \u2014 but the second is actually to show the Palestinians  that when there\u2019s some moderation and cooperation, they can have an  economic advancement. When there\u2019s total war against Israel, which Hamas  wages, they\u2019re going to get nowhere. And to me, since the Palestinians  in Gaza elected Hamas, while certainly there should be humanitarian aid  and people not starving to death, to strangle them economically until  they see that\u2019s not the way to go, makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>According to Gaffney, \u201cCAIR\u2019s recent defense of Hamas is part of a  consistent pattern.\u201d\u00a0 In 1994, the year of CAIR\u2019s founding, Executive  Director Nihad Awad stated, \u201cI am in support of the Hamas movement.\u201d\u00a0 In  2007 CAIR was named an unindicted co-conspirator in <em>U.S. vs. Holy  Land Foundation<\/em>, the largest terrorism funding case in American  history in which defendants were convicted of funneling millions of  dollars to Hamas.\u00a0 In January 2009, <em>FOX News<\/em> reported that the  FBI was &#8220;severing its once-close ties\u201d with CAIR amid \u201cmounting evidence  that it has links to a support network for Hamas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CSP\u2019s investigation into CAIR\u2019s intimidation and Summer of Censorship  Campaign has revealed at least six cases of attempted political  coercion since May:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Calling for the exclusion of the Reverend Franklin      Graham from  prayer services at the Pentagon and Capitol Hill<\/li>\n<li>Pressuring GOP leaders to condemn the TV ads of Florida       congressional candidate Dan Fanelli as \u201cracist and Islamophobic\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Demanding a      probe of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service  (NCIS) for signs of      \u201cIslamophobic training\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Urging GOP      leaders to condemn statements made by Connecticut  congressional candidate      as \u201cracist\u201d and \u201cIslamophobic\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Intimidating      organizers of the Tennessee Tea Party Convention  and Representative Steve      King (R-IA) to exclude prominent author,  blogger and non-profit executive      director Pamela Geller<\/li>\n<li>Accusing      Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) of \u201cblatant disregard for  the sanctity of      human life\u201d for supporting the Israeli blockade of  weapons to the Hamas      regime in Gaza.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gaffney concluded, \u201cCAIR is paid by foreign groups, acts as their  foreign agent in the US, and attempts to censor US citizens who  criticize Hamas, terrorism or apartheid Shariah doctrines.\u00a0 We urge CAIR  to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).\u00a0 A  failure to register could subject them to criminal or civil penalties  under the law.\u201d\u00a0 The Center has reported all of these cases to the  Foreign Agents Registration Unit of the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For full report on CAIR\u2019s<em> <\/em>2010 Summer of Censorship  Campaign see <\/strong><strong><a href=\"..\/?page_id=3959\">https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/?page_id=3959<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For full documentation on CAIR\u2019s actions relevant to the Foreign  Agents Registration Act, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cairobservatory.org\/\">http:\/\/www.cairobservatory.org<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Center, and a growing number of national security experts, \u00a0have  concluded based on overwhelming evidence that CAIR should register under  FARA and report their activities as a foreign agent to the American  public.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investigative Report: CAIR\u2019s 2010 \u201cSummer of Censorship Campaign\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CSP\u2019s investigation into CAIR\u2019s intimidation and censorship campaign  revealed at least six cases of political coercion, including the  censorship attempt against Senator Schumer, in the past forty-five days:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CAIR issued      a press release urging the Pentagon to disinvite  the Rev. Franklin Graham      from speaking at a National Day of Prayer  Event scheduled for May 6, and      called on the public to prevent \u201ca  person with such Islamophobic views      speaking to military  personnel.\u201d\u00a0      Rev. Graham was indeed disinvited by the Army and CAIR  applauded      the decision.\u00a0 Shunned by the      Pentagon, Graham was  invited to speak on Capitol Hill instead.\u00a0 CAIR once again issued a  press release      urging congressional sponsors to disinvite Rev.  Graham.\u00a0 CAIR National Legislative Director Corey      Saylor referred  to Graham as an \u201cIslamophobe\u201d bringing a \u201cmessage of      religious  intolerance.\u201d\u00a0 Graham      persevered despite CAIR\u2019s attacks, praying  instead in the Pentagon parking      lot and at the official Capitol  Hill event later that day.\u00a0 Outside the Pentagon Graham stated, \u201cI\u2019m       happy for the Muslims that celebrate Ramadan here. I\u2019m happy for them  to      celebrate prayer services here, but as a Christian, why can\u2019t I  have same      right?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On May 8      CAIR called on national Republican leaders to  repudiate campaign      advertisements released by Florida GOP  congressional candidate Dan Fanelli.\u00a0 CAIR said the ads \u201cadvocate racial       profiling and promote Islamophobia.\u201d\u00a0      CAIR\u2019s Corey Saylor  called the ads \u201coutrageously racist and      Islamophobic\u201d and called on  local, state and national GOP leaders to      condemn \u201csuch racist and  un-American campaign tactics.\u201d\u00a0 One of Fanelli\u2019s ads showed two men       discussing a terror plot in Arabic, and in another ad he said he would       keep terrorists away from airplanes.\u00a0      Fanelli refused to back  down on his concerns about terrorism and      homeland security and  continued his campaign.<\/li>\n<li>In March      2010 CAIR had called for a probe of the Naval Criminal  Investigative      Service (NCIS) to investigate a report of  \u201canti-Islam bias\u201d in the NCIS\u2019s      training of security personnel.\u00a0       CAIR expressed concern that \u201cmilitary, security and law enforcement       personnel nationwide may be receiving agenda-driven Islamophobic       training.\u201d\u00a0 In response to CAIR\u2019s      demands, NCIS Director Mark  Clookie sent a letter to CAIR Executive      Director Nihad Awad which  CAIR claimed stated that the film \u201cObsession\u201d      should not have been  used in training.\u00a0      On May 11 CAIR publicized excerpts they alleged  came from the      letter.<\/li>\n<li>On May 14      the Connecticut chapter of CAIR called on state  Republican leaders to      repudiate statements made by congressional  candidate Rick Torres during a      primary debate. CAIR\u2019s press release  described Torres\u2019 remarks as      \u201cracist,\u201d \u201canti-Muslim,\u201d  \u201cintolerant,\u201d and \u201cIslamophobic.\u201d\u00a0 CAIR also attributed a May 10 bomb       attack on a Florida mosque to a \u201cgrowing atmosphere of anti-Muslim       sentiment nationwide that results from Islamophobic statements like  those      made by Torres.\u201d\u00a0 Among the      statements which CAIR found  objectionable; Torres \u201cwants America&#8217;s mosques      and Imams to openly  condemn terrorists&#8217; actions.\u201d\u00a0 Torres acknowledged that his comments       sound blunt: \u201cWe can be grown up about this, or we can be politically       correct about it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t mean to      say all Muslims are  radicals but they are here and we have to know which      ones they  are.\u201d\u00a0 Former Muslims      United Board Member Jerry Gordon described  Torres, the son of a Cuban      immigrant, as a \u201chero to former  Muslims.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In a May 20      press release CAIR called on the organizers of the  inaugural Tennessee Tea      Party Convention to disinvite  AtlasShrugs.com blogger Pamela Geller, also      Executive Director of  Stop Islamization of America (SIOA), from speaking      at the event.\u00a0  CAIR described Geller      as an \u201cextremist anti-Islam speaker,  far-right blogger\u201d and called SIOA a      \u201chate group.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWe ask that       convention organizers not legitimize Geller\u2019s extremist anti-Muslim       rhetoric by offering her an official platform,\u201d said CAIR National       Executive Director Nihad Awad.\u00a0 Awad      also called on Rep. Steve  King (R-IA) to cancel his scheduled keynote      address to the  convention if Geller was kept on the schedule.\u00a0 Neither the Tea Party  nor Rep. King      bowed to CAIR\u2019s demands and Geller spoke at the event  as planned.\u00a0 Simon &amp; Schuster will publish      Geller\u2019s new book <em>The  Post-American      Presidency<\/em> on July 27, 2010.<\/li>\n<li>On June 14 CAIR      accused Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who faces  reelection in November, of      making statements that were  \u201cunconscionable, reprehensible and in blatant      disregard for the  sanctity of human life,\u201d and demanded he retract them. CAIR      lifted a  quote from Schumer\u2019s remarks at a public event on June 9 that it       &#8220;makes sense&#8221; to &#8220;strangle [Gaza] economically,&#8221; while      omitting the  context of the statement in which Schumer made clear that his       criticism was reserved for the Hamas regime and that \u201ccertainly there       should be humanitarian aid and people not starving to death.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Center for Security Policy believes that these specific acts by  CAIR to pressure elected officials, congressional candidates, government  agencies, party leaders, religious leaders, investigative reporters,  and authors meet the definition of political influence operations under  the terms of the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).\u00a0 FARA is a  disclosure statute that requires entities acting in the United States as  agents of foreign principals in a political capacity to register and to  make periodic public disclosure of their relationships.\u00a0 CSP has  reported these incidents to the Foreign Agents Registration Unit at the  Department of Justice as violations, because CAIR is not currently  registered as a foreign agent.\u00a0 A growing number of national security  experts have concluded based on overwhelming evidence that CAIR should  register and report their activities as a foreign agent to the American  public.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CAIR Observatory Project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Center for Security Policy\u2019s CAIR Observatory website  (http:\/\/www.cairobservatory.org) presents comprehensive open-source  evidence and analysis alleging that CAIR has acted as a foreign agent of  Hamas\u2019 parent organization the Muslim Brotherhood, as well as the  Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and other foreign  principals based in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran and  Kuwait.<\/p>\n<p>CAIR has received $6.4 million in cash and loans and $54.5 million in  pledges from foreign principals based in those countries, has met and  coordinated with those foreign principals on more than 30 occasions and  engaged in more than 70 political influence operations on their behalf.<\/p>\n<p>CAIR and the Saudi Arabia-based Organization of the Islamic  Conference (OIC) have an established history of collaboration regarding  so-called \u201cIslamophobia.\u201d\u00a0 The OIC\u2019s \u201cTen Year Program of Action\u201d  published in 2005 calls upon all states to enact laws \u201cincluding  deterrent punishments\u201d to counter \u201cIslamophobia.\u201d\u00a0 According to Frank  Gaffney, \u201cCAIR\u2019s efforts are the clearest manifestation of the attempt  to enforce those deterrent punishments in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CAIRObservatory.org website also documents ongoing meetings and  coordination between high-ranking CAIR and OIC officials in the United  States, Saudi Arabia, and most recently this month at an OIC conference  dedicated to Dawa (Islamic missionizing) in Sao Paulo, Brazil.\u00a0 In  January 2007 the OIC donated $325,000 to CAIR for the organization of a  joint conference on \u201cIslamophobia\u201d in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CSP Condemns CAIR\u2019s Campaign Season Attacks on Candidates WASHINGTON DC, June 25, 2010 \u2013 The Center for Security Policy today released the results of an investigation of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) that reveals a clear pattern of intimidation \u2013 the beginning of CAIR\u2019s Summer of Censorship Campaign \u2013 to silence [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":3258,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","template":"","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-4108","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/4108","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=4108"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/4108\/revisions"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/3258"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/cairunmasked.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=4108"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
